Data breaches are on the rise and information that goes missing from a device represents a big risk. Can you afford to take the risk? Take a look at the Donald Trump’s hotel chain case study.
The Trump hotel collection agreed to pay $50,000 in fines and strengthen security measures after data breaches exposed more than 70,000 credit-card numbers and other personal information this September. Investigation showed that an attacker infiltrated the chain’s payment system in May 2014 by accessing an administrative account using legitimate credentials, and then deployed the malware.
If you are an organisation that processes the personally identifiable information of EU residents, legislation is about to get a whole lot tougher as the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force in just over a year. Breached organisations can expect fines of up to 4% of annual global turnover or €20 million – whichever is greater. Fines of this scale could very easily lead to business insolvency and, in some cases, closure.
