SaaS stands for Software-as-a-Service and is described as cloud-based software.

SaaS operates on a web-based model where data (applications, etc.) can be access across multiple devices through a web-browser or internet connection.

SaaS is growing in popularity and is estimated to rise in use, replacing the traditional on-premise software, or software installed and used directly on devices.

Differences between SaaS and on-premise are vast but here is a list of the most notable:

  1. Deployments – SaaS does not need extensive hardware in order to work. This allows for businesses to outsource the software hosting, eliminating in-house software maintenance.
  2. Systems – SaaS usually works on a subscription based, month-to-month model, where businesses can pay for licenses and flex up or down per month. This is drastically different from on-premise, where businesses would have to predict their licensing needs and usage and pay all fees upfront.
  3. Customisation – with web-based software there is more flexibility is SaaS. You can customise your interface by changing the look and feel. You can choose to modify specific areas and can even alter was data is shown on the dashboard. This is a big bonus where users can create their own personal virtual workspace.
  4. SLA – be careful with this one when signing your SaaS contracts! In most cases you will own your own data and can even have it backed up locally anytime you need. However, some vendors may ask to retain ownership of your data. If that is the case, try to negotiate or go with a different vendor.

Right now, many businesses are making the switch to SaaS because of the perks. However, some are stuck in the hybrid state, having both SaaS and on-premise applications. Two big reasons businesses stay in this hybrid state are:

  1. On-premise contracts – some of these contracts can extend for 3 to 5 years. In this case, businesses need to wait out their contracts before switching to SaaS.
  2. Businesses do not know how to make the switch – sometimes it might feel easier to stick with what you know. Luckily for you, TBSC is proud of our Smarter solutions for software asset management.
