With Microsoft’s goal to be the one-stop-shop for tech, there are many
organisations moving to Office 365. Highly in demand, the shift to the cloud
is ever growing. Especially migrating the Exchange Server to Exchange Online
in Office 365.
Though this task might prove to be difficult for some, there are some very
positive outcomes when migrating from Exchange Server to Exchange Online
are. These include:
1. No longer need to invest in the Exchange Server infrastructure
2. No continuation of additional costs that are associated with the
Exchange Server
Yet, if you talk to anyone who has migrated data from the Exchange Server
over to Office 365, you will come to know it really is a complicated
process. Why? Even the most straight forward of migrations involve a lot of
preparation. Likewise, there are steps that should be followed to ensure a
smooth transition, especially to avoid the risk of losing data.
Before you help your clients make this switch, here are some things to
consider:
1. Know your clients Exchange Server version:
The method used for your clients to switch to Office 365 depends highly on
the current version of Exchange Server that is used. For instance, the
cutover migrations works best for migrations from Exchange Server 2003
(along with the latest ones), but this would also involve mailboxes lesser
than 2000.
Mailboxes over 2000 can use the Stages migration method. This works great
for Exchange Server 2003 and 2007.
If your clients are on Exchange Server 2010, or higher, we advise the hybrid
configuration, especially if they are interested in maintaining on-premise
and cloud simultaneously.
2. Determine the environment:
In order to have the best possible migration, the Exchange Server should be
a healthy environment which includes proper deployment. This means before
you migrate, you need to check the Exchange Server configuration to align
with the Office 365 Health, Readiness, and Connectivity tool.
3. Discover what is on-premise:
When migrating it is always advisable to discover what is on the device
beforehand. This means taking inventory of current applications to see which
can be migrated over. Oftentimes there are applications that do not need to
come with the migration. In this case, they can be left behind or even
replaced with a Microsoft version.
4. Check application usage:
Does your client keep track of what users have which subscriptions? It would
be very hard to get a definite ‘yes’ to that question. Most businesses have
no problem purchasing and activating licenses, the issue comes when these
licenses are forgotten. Checking application usage to ensure active users
are migrated over is a must before the migration process.
